As you can imagine, getting to Dunton Hot Springs is not an easy task, but that’s what makes it so appealing. If you fly into Denver, be prepared to embark on an eight hour roadtrip across the state, and drive into southwest Colorado.

There are plenty of places to visit along the way to stay over night. Other options include flying into one of the smaller airports on the western side of the state, rent a car, and drive south.

What is the history of Dunton Hot Springs?

The area around Dunton Hot Springs has a long history of Native American use, with various tribes utilizing the natural hot springs for their therapeutic properties.

The resort’s history is closely tied to the mining boom in the region during the late 1800s. In the late 1800s, the town of Dunton was established as a mining town.

As with many mining towns, Dunton’s prosperity was short-lived. By the early 20th century, the mining industry began to decline, and the town’s population dwindled. Eventually, the mines were no longer profitable, leading to the abandonment of the town.

 Today, Dunton Hot Springs is a renowned luxury resort that offers a unique blend of historic charm and modern comfort.

The Soak

The Dunton Hot Springs describe their springs as a calcium bicarbonate composition, enriched with a potent infusion of dissolved iron and manganese, along with a subtle touch of lithium.

They describe bicarbonate-rich waters as being able to help aid in the dilation of peripheral blood vessels, enhancing blood circulation to the body’s outermost regions. Moreover, the magnesium content actively converts blood sugar into energy and fosters the maintenance of radiant and nourished skin.

While it’s only a few miles outside of downtown, it’s much better to get there by car.

The roads leading up to the hot springs are narrow, winding, and can be treacherous, so make sure your vehicle is up for the challenge.

In winter (November 1 – May 1) 4×4 is mandatory.

Alternatively, you can hop on the shuttle that will pick you up in downtown Steamboat. Book directly on the shuttle’s website or call ahead.

What is the history of Strawberry Park Hot Springs?

The Rocky Mountains surrounding Steamboat Springs have been treasured by Native Americans for thousands of years.

Ute Indians were known to visit the Mineral Hot Springs before battle or hunting as it was thought to bring stamina and strength.

Once it became known as Hot Springs Creek, the springs became a secret getaway for the  Steamboat settlers.

They used to reach the pools on foot, horseback, snowshoes, or cross-country skis.

The Soak

The hot springs flow from the hillside rocks at a temperature of 147ºF and fill a series of pools that are positioned around the area.

The site’s several mineral pools of varying temperatures, ranging from 101 to 105ºF, as well as a cold plunge pool for those brave enough to take the plunge.

The pools are nestled in a wooded valley with stunning views of the surrounding mountains, making for a serene and tranquil atmosphere. 

The site is clothing-optional after dark, so if that’s not your cup of tea, plan your visit accordingly. Glass containers are strictly prohibited on the premises, so be sure to bring your own plastic or metal water bottle. Pets are not allowed.

There are changing rooms, but if you are not staying at the resort your access to the facilities are limited. Make sure you book your stay at least 14 days in advance. Lodging options range from camping to unique stays in a covered wagon, train caboose and rustic cabins.

Traditional massages are offered in a designated area next to the pools, but for a truly unique experience, consider booking a watsu aquatic therapy appointment in their dedicated watsu pool.

Strawberry Hot Spring is a three hour drive from Denver, located in Steamboat Springs. In the wintertime, Steamboat is also a popular ski destination.

What is the history of The Springs Resort?

According to legend, the Ute tribe faced a plague that even their most skilled medicine men could not cure. So, they undertook a ritual by building an enormous fire, offering prayers, and dancing through the night along the serene banks of the San Juan River.

When they awoke the following morning, they discovered a bubbling pool of scalding water where the fire had blazed fiercely. The waters bestowed upon them a newfound vitality, completely curing their affliction once they immersed themselves the spring.

Today, after changing various ownerships over the years, The Springs Resort and Spa and the City of Pagosa Springs act the stewards of this powerful natural resource.

The Soak

At an astounding depth of 1,002 feet, The Mother Spring reigns as the planet’s deepest geothermal hot spring, nurturing all 25 of the surrounding mineral pools.

These pools boast a temperature spectrum ranging from a soothing 45 to a toasty 114 degrees Fahrenheit (28 to 46 degrees Celsius).

Potassium, Magnesium, Zinc, Lithium, Iron, Manganese are some of the 13 minerals that you can find in these healing waters. 

The pools are open to the public, so you can buy a day pass to soak even if you are not planning to stay over night at the hotel.

Guests of the hotel have 24 hour soaking access, while the hours of operation for the public are 9AM to 9:30 PM.

Cabanas are also available for daily rental.

The Springs Resort houses a full spa and wellness center that offers massage, facials, and body treatments.

Getting to The Springs will require a car.

The resort is about a 4-hour drive from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and approximately 5 hours from Denver, Colorado.

For those flying in, the nearest major airport is Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO), which is around 60 miles away from Pagosa Springs. From there, you can rent a car or arrange for shuttle services to reach the resort.

General Admission includes the Historic Bath House, Creekside Hot Springs, Upper Pools & Infinity Pool. 

The main soaking pool’s temperature is 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Creekside Hot Springs are the most unique pools, located in Chalk Creek. The hot springs water bubbles out of the ground at 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix the cold water in Chalk Creek to create your perfect hot springs pool.

If you book in advance, you are able to secure a private soaking experience in their private pool area.
